2010 Annual Report
STATE OF THE SCEDC: 2010 was a year of new beginnings for the Sheboygan County Economic Development Corporation (SCEDC). After 25 years, the Sheboygan Development Corporation (SDC) transitioned into a new county-wide economic development effort in late 2009.
In response to several major corporate relocations in 2008 and 2009, which had a significant impact on employment throughout Sheboygan County, leaders from both private and public sectors galvanized efforts to develop a comprehensive county-wide program to assist businesses and entrepreneurs, attract new investment, and improve the economic well-being of the residents and businesses of the county. In August 2009, the SDC Board of Directors amended its articles of incorporation and evolved into a new private/public non-profit organization with a county-wide focus and representation, the SCEDC. The transition became complete in January 2010, as the SCEDC hired full-time staff and opened its first office.
The organization literally hit the ground running, as the new Board of Directors organized and established an aggressive five-year strategic plan upon which the organization’s progress will be monitored and evaluated. Specificity was attached to the SCEDC’s goals to allow for benchmarking throughout the next five years and to allow the SCEDC to hold itself accountable to all stakeholders. The SCEDC established strategic goals of helping to create and retain 3,500 jobs in Sheboygan County and assisting businesses in activities that will result in $100 million in capital investments in Sheboygan County. No doubt, these strategic goals are aggressive. However, as we are not far removed from recent economic conditions and as local business continue to struggle, these goals are appropriate and achievable. The SCEDC is building strong partnerships between private and public organizations and capitalizing on shared commitments to improve local communities in order to build a better future for Sheboygan County.
In 2011, we will continue to strengthen the SCEDC programs, services, communications, and organization. New and aggressive outreach efforts to support existing businesses, the pursuit of new funding opportunities for local businesses and the SCEDC, and expanding services through increased partnership opportunities will define SCEDC efforts in 2011. Looking back on the whirlwind of activity, it is appropriate to say that much has been accomplished. Yet the expectations and stakes remain high and much opportunity lies ahead.
We will continue to fulfill “The Promise of Sheboygan County,” in a place where the horizons are as expansive as the possibilities, where ambition finds fertile ground to expand and flourish, and entrepreneurial spirits realize dreams. Where one can raise a family. Grow a business. Spend a lifetime. A place that holds the promise to be more. To live more. To simply do more.
We look forward to continuing our service to Sheboygan County and sincerely thank you for your support of our important economic development efforts.
