Council OKs Armory demo contracts
SHEBOYGAN – The city’s Common Council on Monday night approved entering contracts with several companies to demolish the Armory and restore the land where it sits.
But that may not be the last word on the iconic Sheboygan building’s fate.
The affirmative votes on two separate measures — one to authorize the contracts and another to set aside $400,000 to cover the work — nearly closes out a long-running saga over the building’s future that’s already seen multiple efforts this year to forestall its demise. But Mayor Mike Vandersteen on Tuesday said the city’s Historic Preservation Commission could opt to delay potential demolition for another three months in a last-ditch effort to find a suitor willing to restore the structure.
