The Sailing Education Association of Sheboygan is looking to begin construction in June on its new headquarters at the former Alliant Energy property on the Sheboygan River near downtown.

According to a project application recently filed with the city, SEAS has proposed razing the Alliant office and constructing a 16,000-square-foot building to house administrative staff and to provide space for educational programs aimed at promoting maritime recreation.

A separate 12,000-square-foot building will be used for boat storage and maintenance.

City officials say the project is an important step toward enhancing the stretch of South Eighth Street that links downtown with the South Pier District and Riverfront.

The proposed development at 824 S. Eighth St. would incorporate design elements similar to the fish shanties located in the Riverfront area, but with a more contemporary feel that would link it with a modern apartment complex in development nearby.
