Focus on Success: Sheboygan County Making the News

Sheboygan County named 16th Most Innovative Area in the Nation

Sheboygan County ranks among the top most innovative areas in the United States, according to the latest report from the Brookings Institution, titled "Patenting Prosperity: Invention and Economic Performance in the United States and its Metropolitan Areas."  This study focuses on the top 20 areas across the nation that produce over 60% of patents between 1980 and 2012.   Sheboygan County currently ranks 16th on this list.

Sheboygan County has a patenting rate of 1,045 patents per million residents and averages two patents per thousand jobs, putting us on the map with Boulder, CO, Austin, TX and Silicon Valley. Our local business leaders exhibit brilliant innovation through strong leadership and dynamic teamwork among their workforce. Sheboygan County was also recently named the Most Equitable Community in the United States by the Global Post as well as the Forth Safest Metropolitan Area in the United States by the Morgan-Quinto Press.

Sheboygan County named 48th Smartest Area

According to a recent report conducted by Lumosity titled, "Lumosity's Smartest Cities 2013" Sheboygan County ranks in the top 50 smartest areas (top 10%) in the United States.  Data collected from over three million people across the nation ranks Sheboygan County number 48.

Many of the top areas listed in this report are "college towns" including  Ithaca, N.Y., State College, PA and Lafeyette, IN.  Daniel Sternberg, Lumosity Data Scientist, commented on this finding by stating, "Neuroscience research has found that those who are engaged in learning and cognitively stimulating activities throughout the lifetime build up a 'cognitive reserve' that helps maintain and improve cognitive performance."  

 

Focus on Businesses: Sheboygan County businesses making the news

American Orthodontics
American Orthodontics held its global headquarters ribbon-cutting event at its new state-of-the-art, 280,000-square-foot facility. A.O. is the largest privately held orthodontics manufacturer in the world, with more than 90% of their products made right here in Sheboygan. 

The company employs 450 locally (more than 600 worldwide) and has not once experienced layoffs in its 45 years of existence. Displaying consistent sales growth every year since 1968, American Orthodontics typifies business growth for Sheboygan County. 

Two Men and a Truck
Two Men and a Truck  has been servicing Sheboygan County for over 10 years and is very excited to be opening a local office in Plymouth later this year! Two Men and a Truck is a residential and commercial moving company that considers its staff to be "The Movers that Care", offering different services including internal moves, local and long distance moving, interstate moving, a packing service and manpower to load portable storage units. In addition, they sell a full line of boxes and packing supplies.

Prevea - Oostburg Clinic
Oostburg has officially broken ground on their Prevea Health Clinic. This project is the result of local government, the Oostburg School District and many businesses coming together to show their support; specifically area investors including Dutchland Plastics, Viking Mastic and Oostburg Concrete.

Furthermore, with over 4,000 sq. ft. of retail and/or office space available to lease when construction is complete, this project offers a very unique opportunity to businesses looking to relocate in Oostburg. This is one of many projects marking significant progress in economic development throughout the Village of Oostburg.

A tentative ribbon-cutting ceremony is planned for November 1st, 2013.

Glacier Transit and Storage
Glacier Transit and Storage has recently completed a $6 million project which will increase customer demands for storage in Plymouth, WI. This expansion has added nearly 90,000 square feet of refrigerated food warehousing in addition to adding seven new jobs.

The effect of this recent project is quite great. The expansion will provide increased on-time delivery and shipping of product and a continued support of its third party logistics functions as demands from customers rise. The company currently serves as an integral part of the dairy industry, providing services such as refrigerated and ambient temperature storage, trucking throughout Wisconsin and inventory financing.

As Glacier Transit and Storage looks to the future, it is focused on incorporating best practices in energy efficient warehousing and transportation. 

Vollrath Company
Vollrath Company's expansion is expected to be completed in July. This $4.5 million project will create 158,000 square feet of distribution space. Within the past four years, the company has doubled in size, adding 700 employees expanding its product lines. 

After 138 years of successful growth, the Vollrath Company certainly is a model of business growth in Sheboygan County.
